United Airlines recorded double-digit improvements in cargo revenues and traffic during the first quarter of the year.
The busiest US cargo carrier saw first-quarter cargo traffic increase by 20.3% year on year to 748m cargo ton miles.

Revenues also improved during the period but by the lower amount of 13.4% against a year earlier to $220m.
It is the second quarter in a row the airline has managed to improve quarterly cargo revenues year on year after a run of six straight declines.

While revenues improved, the airline’s revenues per ton mile dipped below the 30 cents level to 29.41 cents per ton mile.
Delta Air Lines last week also reported first quarter performance, with revenues and traffic declining by just over 1%. However, its revenues per ton mile were above United’s, standing at 34.04 cents.
Overall United saw revenues increase by 2.7% to $8.4bn, while net income declined by 69.3% to $96m.
