Air France KLM Martinair (AF-KLMP) Cargo moved around 3,000 tonnes of flowers to Europe in the weeks before Valentine’s Day, putting Boeing 747-400 full freighter and combi aircraft main deck capacity into the three main flower origins of Nairobi, Quito and Bogotá.
AF-KLMP Cargo executive vice president Marcel de Nooijer, said: “We are strongly committed to the flower market and successfully met seasonal peak flower demand again for this year’s Valentine’s Day.”
He added that the ideal way to handle delicate fresh flowers is a stable cold chain with quick and efficient transportation to keep them as fresh as possible. During the flight cargo hold temperature is maintained at a constant 2 to 8 Celsius degrees.
Royal FloraHolland, Schiphol Cargo and AF-KLMP Cargo have also set up the Holland Flower Alliance of floricultural logistics professionals. Amsterdam remains Europe’s flower logistics centre with Schiphol Airport its main hub.
